How to Perform Wudhu: The Ritual Ablution for Prayer

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the essential link between purity and prayer, stating:

“Allah does not accept the prayer of anyone who has nullified his ablution until he performs it again.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6954, Sahih Muslim 225)

This means that a Muslim’s prayer is not valid unless they are in a state of ritual purity. Therefore, before performing Salah, one must ensure both physical cleanliness—through wudhu (ablution)—and that their clothing and place of prayer are clean.

Wudhu must be performed using pure, clean water. Here is the step-by-step method, following the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him):

  1. Make the Intention (Niyyah): In your heart, intend to perform wudhu for the sake of Allah and to prepare for prayer.
  2. Say “Bismillah”: Begin by saying, “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah).
  3. Wash Your Hands: Wash your right hand, then your left hand, up to the wrists—including between the fingers—three times.
  4. Rinse Your Mouth: Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water three times.
  5. Clean Your Nose: Gently sniff water into your nostrils and then blow it out, three times.
  6. Wash Your Face: Wash your entire face three times—from the hairline to the chin, and from ear to ear.
  7. Wash Your Arms: Wash your right forearm, including the hand and up to (and including) the elbow, three times. Then do the same for your left forearm.
  8. Wipe Your Head: With wet hands, wipe your entire head once—starting from the front hairline, moving to the back of the neck, and then returning to the front.
  9. Wipe Your Ears: Use your index fingers to wipe the inside of your ears and your thumbs to wipe the outside, once.
  10. Wash Your Feet: Start with the right foot, washing from the toes up to (and including) the ankles, making sure to rub between the toes. Then wash the left foot in the same manner, three times.

After completing wudhu, it is a confirmed Sunnah to recite the following supplication:

“Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh.”
(I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever performs wudhu and does it well, then recites this testimony, the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he may enter through whichever he wishes.”
(Sahih Muslim 234)

Thus, wudhu is not merely a physical act of cleaning; it is a spiritual preparation that purifies the body and soul, readying the believer to stand before Allah in prayer.
